Abstracts
Speakers have been around for a while and every company is trying their best to enhance their product for the consumer and for their business. James Bullough Lansing (JBL) is known for its quality and features, which makes it one of the best speaker companies on the market. This technical description will go over the history of JBL and one the parts of their latest projects the portable speaker JBL Boombox 3
Introduction
For years JBL has been engineering top market speakers such as the Boombox series which has reached its third generation, the Boombox 3. The BoomBox 3 was released in September of 2022 and it’s since then caught the eye of many people who seek a speaker that is not huge but also not small and offers great audio for any occasion at any place (JBL, n.d). The speaker is built with many features which makes it one the best speakers on the market not only for its audio but also for its simplistic design (fig.1). The battery life on the boombox is one of JBL’s best and with its built in power bank it’s made for music to never stop (JBL, 2022b). From the handle to carry it around to the material used in its design, it is made to create everlasting memories.

HIstorical Background
JBL was founded in 1946 and was originally named Lansing Sound but then changed the name to their founder’s name James Bullough Lansing (JBL)(JBL, n.d.). James himself was an engineer with a vision for speakers and sounds which would ultimately put the company on the map later on with the introductions of several speakers from the ones used in concert and venues to portable speakers which anyone can take with them anywhere (HARMAN, n.d.).

The Harman International company, which is known for their engineering and manufacturing for sound, video and light, would become the parent owner of JBL (JBL, n.d.). With the brainwork coming from James and the business aspects coming from Harman International, they were able to create history for themselves such as teaming up with Toyota in 1996, winning two Academy Awards in 2002 and many more (Our Story, n.d.).
In addition the Boombox 3 Portable Speaker has two earlier generations. The first was introduced in 2017 with the Boombox 1 then the Boombox 2 in 2019, while the construction has been almost the same (Fig. 2), the difference comes in the sound they offer as well as the waterproof and durability they have, which at the time was one of the best (Ahmed, M., Ketterling, T., & Peroramas, J. 2023, August 24).

List of Parts and Functions
The JBL Boombox 3 is large in comparison to other portable speakers, which allows for the speakers themselves to be bigger and louder in comparison to a normal small portable speaker. The dimensions of the Boombox 3 are 19.0 x 10.1 x 7.9 inches with a weight of 14.7 lbs (JBL, 2022b).
It has a metal handle on top that allows it to be easily carried around from place to place with rubber lines on the bottom of the handle for a better grip (Fig.3). We also see these rubber stripes on the bottom of the speaker that allows it to sit on any surface without the concern that it is going to slide off (Fig. 5). On/off, bluetooth pairing, play/pause, party mode, volume buttons are all towards the top of the speaker (Fig. 3). There is an LED ring around the on/off and bluetooth buttons which light up when the device is on and/or pairing to a device. Also there is a LED bar under the JBL logo which indicates how much battery life it has left, if the light on the bar is full that means that the speaker is at full battery while if it changes color to red and the light bar is not full it means it’s low on battery (Fig. 4). The back of the speakers has a rubber flap that opens and reveals the charging ports, which are AC charging port, USB-A port and a 3.5 mm jack. By using the USB-A port and connecting it to your phone, the speaker will serve as a powerbank and charge your phone, which is quite the feature for a speaker (Fig. 6). In addition the material all around the speaker is mainly made of a water/dust proof fabric silhouette and plastic, this is essential in making it durable and resistant to dust and water (JBL, 2022b). Two side caps are surrounded by plastic and by the water/dust proof silhouette. It is also IP67 water/dust proof which makes it safe to take on the go to the beach, or pool, or to have it out on rainy days (Fig. 7)(JBL, 2022b).

Top View
1) Metal Handle: The handle has been crafted to make it easy to take on the go. Also on the bottom part of the handle there are rubber stripes which were made to get a solid grip when carrying this speaker around and since it is not the lightest or smallest speaker it really helps.
2) On/off, Bluetooth, Play/Pause, Party Mode, Volume buttons: The buttons are the main and basic functions of the speaker which are made easy to see and use, with just a click of the buttons the action is done. Party Mode is something that is made specifically for some JBL speakers and its function is to be able to connect multiple speakers and have them play simultaneously the same audio.

3) LED Ring/Bar: The LED lights are used to show when the speaker is on and turned on, when the speaker is pairing, and it shows the battery live by the bar on the bottom of the logo when it’s fully charged it is white and full. On the contrary, when the battery life is low it turns red. When the speaker is off the LEDS lights also go off.

4) Rubber Stripes: This was made for support so the speaker does not slide off easily. On any surface the stripes make it hard for the speaker to slip.

5) Rubber Flap, AC charging port, USB-A port , 3.5 mm jack: The ports are all covered by the rubber flap which is useful for not letting in any water or dust. The main port is the AC charging, as it is what charges the actual speaker. Apart from that we find a USB-A and 3.55mm jack. The USB-A is what is used to connect to your phone and uses the speaker as a charging bank. The 3.55mm jack is used to connect an aux cord to your phone.

6) Main Material and Side Cups: Here we see the different types of materials used made specifically to help protect the speaker from any hits, bumps, water or even dust. The side caps serve as a protection layer to the sides of the speaker which is dust/water proof.

Conclusion
Every event from big to small needs a good speaker which can help create numerous memories that last a lifetime. The problem is sometimes speakers are not as good when it comes to sound or the features the speaker has to offer. Lucky JBL has been engineering many speakers for years and has become a world-renowned company producing one of the most popular portable speakers, the Boombox 3.
